TAKE ACTION: Tell Your Senators To Say NO to President-elect's Nominee for USDOE Secretary!

Betsy DeVos is President-elect Trump's top pick to lead the U.S. Department of Education. The U.S. Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee is expected to vote on this nomination Tuesday, January 24th, 2017, with a full floor vote by the Senate the week of January 30, 2017. As Louisiana educators, it is crucial for us to take immediate action on this important matter.

Here are a few key issues about DeVos' breadth of knowledge of the department of which she is nominated to lead:

  • She would become the first secretary of education with zero experience in public schools.
  • She has never worked in a public school, she didn't attend public schools and didn't send her children to public schools.
  • She has never been a teacher or school administrator.
  • She has never served on any public board of education.

As a lobbyist and political donor:

  • She has consistently and systematically worked to undermine public education and privatize our public schools.
  • She fought for tax cuts for the wealthy at the expense of public schools.
  • She fought for vouchers that divert taxpayer funds from public schools to private schools.
  • She fought to allow for-profit charter school corporations to make money off taxpayers with no accountability.
  • She has consistently and persistently pushed a corporate agenda to privatize, de-professionalize, and impose cookie-cutter solutions to public education.

Check out a few excerpts from this week's nomination hearing, which back-up the above:

On the national level, NEA member engagement in the last ten days has been remarkable, with nearly 200-thousand letters sent to senators urging opposition to DeVos, almost 3,000 "patch through" phone calls made to HELP Committee members and more than 7,000 calls made to the entire U.S. Senate.

It is crucial for Louisiana citizens to add their voice to this important conversation -- our senators must hear our concerns surrounding DeVos' lack of knowledge of our public education system. I urge you to please take action TODAY! Here's how:

to send a letter to your senator calling upon him to reject DeVos' nomination.

You can back up the email message with a phone call -
